GIS Technician

We are seeking a permanent full-time GIS Technician to join our Remote Sensing and Geomatics Group.  As part of this dynamic Hatfield team, the GIS Technician will provide technical expertise including GIS data capture and management, geo-processing and spatial analysis, cartography, and CAD. In addition, field work may be conducted as member of experienced field crews to support environmental projects throughout Western Canada.

This position benefits from our policy allowing working from home while providing access to our modern and welcoming office spaces in North Vancouver, New Westminster, Calgary, Terrace, Fort St. John, and Fort McMurray. Travel opportunities may arise to support projects throughout Canada and internationally.

Responsibilities:

  • Support Hatfield’s multi-disciplinary teams of environmental scientists, hydrologists, hydrogeologists, wildlife and marine biologists, and remote sensing scientists with map and spatial data analysis requirements.

  • Produce high quality cartographic products and CAD drawings using ESRI suite of tools and/or Autodesk for fieldwork planning, reports, and presentations.

  • Support field crews with mobile data collection solutions using GPS-enabled devices and applications (e.g., ESRI Field Maps).

  • Conduct spatial data manipulations tasks (data capture, conversion, and translation).

  • Design and implement data integration and spatial analysis of various vector and raster data sets from multiple sources (e.g., GPS data, topographic and bathymetric data, satellite imagery, etc.) to produce tabular and map products.

  • Develop and maintain geodatabases and perform various data management duties such as data archiving and cleanup.

  • Support data presentation and dissemination through web-based mapping tools (e.g., ArcGIS Online).

  • Streamline geoprocessing where possible through scripting and automation.

 

Education and Experience:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Geography, GIS, Computer Science, or other GIS related field.

  • At least 1 to 2 years of professional experience (willing to consider differing combinations of education/experience).

  • Proficient in ESRI suite of programs (ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, Field Maps, and ArcGIS Online), including extensions such Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst.

  • Experience in spatial data acquisition, manipulation, and conversion.

  • Knowledge of GIS data standards, projections, and coordinate systems.

  • Knowledge of federal, provincial, and global datasets and repositories for GIS data.

  • Experience implementing mobile-based field applications.

  • Excellent communication skills (i.e., verbal and written) and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.

  • A collaborator with a high propensity for teamwork and able to work with minimal supervision.

  • A self-starter with a passion for continuous learning to advance personal and company goals and objectives.

  • A passion to advance sustainable development through application of geospatial technologies and analytics.

  • Experience developing GIS analysis workflows tools with Python.

  • Research and analytical skills (literature research, geomatics data acquisition, compilation, and analysis).

  • Work within a consulting environment requiring good time management, flexibility, and teamwork.

  • Experience with drone-based digital aerial photogrammetry and data processing (e.g., Pix4D or Agisoft Metashape).

  • Experience with CAD software tools.
