Hatfield is seeking a permanent full-time Aquatics Specialist, based out of our Calgary, Alberta office. The successful candidate will have a passion for the freshwater aquatic environment, possess technical expertise and experience in fisheries and aquatic resources monitoring and assessment, an understanding of environmental legislation, and a desire to lead field surveys within Alberta, British Columbia, and northern Canada.
Responsibilities
Implementing aquatic baseline characterization and impact assessments, environmental effects monitoring, habitat assessment and quantification, and habitat offsetting and restoration planning in support of environmental assessment, monitoring, protection, and permitting projects.
Leading field programs to assess fisheries and aquatic ecosystem health and integrity, including fish and fish habitat baseline surveys, mark-recapture surveys, species-at-risk assessments, and effectiveness monitoring of restoration/offsetting projects.
Compiling, managing, and interpreting environmental data, and preparing technical documents and study designs.
Providing technical assistance on proposal development, project scheduling, and budget management activities.
Assisting the management of freshwater fisheries and aquatics components of projects in conformance with local, provincial, and federal environmental laws and regulations.
Undergraduate degree or higher in a relevant field of study.
Minimum of five years of relevant experience.
Relevant professional designation (e.g., P.Biol, RPBio) or eligibility to apply.
Working knowledge of federal and provincial environmental legislation.
Technical expertise leading aquatic field surveys.
Valid Canadian driver’s license and appropriate qualifications for work in Alberta and British Columbia.
Working in a dynamic consulting environment and within large multi-disciplinary teams.
Field experience in PIT tagging, snorkel surveys, redd surveys, index netting, electrofishing, and passive entrapment capture techniques.
Experience with salmonids.
Analytical skills applicable to management and statistical analysis of environmental data, including familiarity with Excel and R programming language.
Project management skills, including concise verbal and written communication, budget tracking, and proposal development.
