Hatfield’s Remote Sensing and Geomatics Group develops remote sensing solutions for our clients to tackle challenges like forest monitoring and assessment, ecosystem disturbance and restoration, wetland identification and management, coastal habitat assessment, and biodiversity management. Example projects include developing open tools for ecosystem restoration assessment and monitoring and AI-based detection of North Atlantic Right Whales.

We’re seeking a Remote Sensing Specialist with project management experience to join our team to provide technical and management expertise to address a wide range of environmental and societal challenges.  Ideally, this hybrid position will be based in one of our Canadian offices, however, we are also open to this person being fully remote. Travel opportunities may arise to support projects throughout Canada and internationally.

Responsibilities

  • Project management: deliver multi-year and collaborative remote sensing projects through effective planning (scope, objectives, and detailed work plans), managing resources, time and budget, and multiple dependencies.

  • Conceptualize, develop, and implement robust, innovative solutions to analyze remote sensing data.

  • Lead and/or support proposal development activities as part of external bid processes and business development efforts.

  • Manage internal and external stakeholder relationships and expectations and effectively work on multidisciplinary teams and projects.

  • Maintain strong client relations.

  • Assess, interpret, and synthesize information as a lead author of technical reports.

  • Provide technical leadership to other remote sensing staff on project teams.

Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. or M.Sc. in Geography, GIS, Forestry, Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or equivalent.

  • A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience developing remote sensing solutions (willing to consider differing combinations of education/experience).

  • Proven project management experience on small to large sized technical projects.

  • Geospatial image processing using Python and relevant libraries (e.g., GDAL, rasterio, xarray, geopandas, numpy).

  • Business development and/or marketing experience (identify potential leads, organize sales presentations, meetings, and marketing strategies).

  • Technical report and proposal writing.

Other Assets/Skills

  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with high propensity for teamwork.

  • Ability to explain complex concepts clearly.

  • Strong skillsets for writing proposals.

  • Knowledge of different project management methodologies (e.g., Waterfall, Agile, Scrum)

  • Ability to analyze complex scopes of work and simplify them to develop solutions.

  • A passion to advance environmental management through applied remote sensing technologies and analytics.

  • Experience working on Canadian Space Agency or European Space Agency funded projects.

  • An ability/interest to work internationally, with international development organizations.

  • Ability to liaise with various stakeholders, fostering a collaborative environment.

  • Machine learning for automated data analysis (e.g. Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, Convolutional Neural Networks).

Salary range: $73,000 - $105,000. We extend an invitation to applicants of all levels to submit their candidacy for this role. Please be advised, that in the course of our assessment of your qualifications, we retain the right to adjust the seniority classification of the position accordingly.
