Hatfield is seeking a permanent full-time, experienced, and technically focused Aquatics Environmental Specialist to become part our dynamic Environmental Monitoring and Assessment (EMA) team in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The successful candidate will provide technical support and assistance for the environmental permitting, assessment, and monitoring of industrial projects in Alberta. Duties will consist of organizing and implementing required environmental assessment and monitoring programs, including study design, statistical analysis and reporting, and ensuring environmental compliance of project activities with all relevant local, provincial, and federal environmental regulations. The successful candidate will possess scientific expertise and experience in effects monitoring and assessment within aquatic ecosystems, including fish populations and fish health.

Responsibilities

  • Implement aquatic baseline characterization and impact assessments, environmental effects monitoring, habitat assessment and quantification, and habitat offsetting and restoration planning in support of environmental assessment, monitoring, protection, and permitting projects. 

  • Lead field programs in the assessment of fisheries and aquatic ecosystem health, occasionally in remote locations.

  • Provide technical assistance on proposal development, project scheduling, and budget management activities.

  • Compile, manage, and interpret environmental data.

  • Prepare and submit technical reports.

  • Ensure compliance with Hatfield’s Health and Safety Management Plan, the law, and client health and safety protocols, as well as compliance with Hatfield’s Quality Management Plan and external requirements and regulations.

Education and Experience

  • Undergraduate degree or higher in a relevant field of study.

  • Five years or more of progressive work experience implementing environmental studies.

  • Leading field studies including fish and fish habitat assessments, water and sediment quality sampling, and/or lower trophic (i.e., benthic invertebrates and plankton) sampling.

  • Working knowledge of federal and provincial environmental legislation.

  • Analytical skills applicable to study design and statistical analysis of environmental data.

  • Experience writing comprehensive technical reports.

  • A valid Canadian driver’s license and experience driving a pickup truck.

 

Other Assets/Skills

  • Experience working in a dynamic consulting environment within large multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Relevant professional designation (e.g., P.Biol, RPBio) or eligibility to apply.

  • Oil sands site experience.
