Hatfield has a tremendous leadership opportunity for a permanent full-time Manager, Fisheries & Aquatics, to join our Environmental Monitoring and Assessment (EMA) Group. This position can be located either in North Vancouver, BC, New Westminster, BC, or Calgary, AB.  The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of environmental consulting and demonstrate:

 
  • Exceptional team leadership, communication, collaboration, and people management skills.
  • A successful track record of managing, motivating, and sustainably growing a team of professional biologists in a consulting environment.
  • An aptitude for business development and strategic planning, project work retention, client engagement, overseeing external specialists, and relationship management.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and decision-making capabilities.
  • A strong working knowledge and understanding of fish and fish habitat in BC and/or AB, habitat offsetting/restoration and effectiveness monitoring, aquatic ecology, and relevant federal and provincial environmental legislation.

Responsibilities
 
  • Supervise, manage, and mentor teams of environmental specialists and technicians.
  • Manage a portfolio of EMA Group projects.
  • Provide clients with high quality, sound and strategic advice to efficiently navigate relevant permitting requirements.
  • Provide technical expertise and oversight on environmental protection, assessment, permitting, habitat offsetting/restoration design, and monitoring.
  • Collaborate with biologists, ecologists, hydrologists, geoscientists, social scientists, engineers, and other project specialists to implement multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Team resourcing, scheduling, and health and safety.
  • Lead business development activities, including actively promoting Hatfield’s services to clients, strengthening existing corporate relationships, preparing financial and technical proposals, and negotiating with current and prospective clients.
  • Act as the primary client contact on proposals and projects.
  • Lead meetings/presentations with/to clients and regulators/interest groups.
  • Lead field programs, occasionally in remote locations.
  • Manage and interpret complex environmental data.
  • Prepare and submit technical reports.
  • Ensure compliance with Hatfield’s Health and Safety Management Plan, the law, and client health and safety protocols, as well as compliance with Hatfield’s Quality Management Plan and external requirements and regulations.

Education and Experience
 
  • Undergraduate degree or higher in a relevant field of study.
  • Relevant professional designation (e.g., P.Biol, RPBio) or eligibility to apply.
  • Eight years or more of progressive work experience in an environmental consulting environment, including managing environmental projects at a senior level.
  • Working knowledge of federal and provincial environmental legislation.
  • Analytical skills applicable to study design and statistical analysis of environmental data.
  • Experience writing comprehensive technical reports.
  • A valid Canadian driver’s license for the past three years, experience driving a pickup truck, and the ability to be added to our third-party vehicle insurance provider.

  • Experience working in a dynamic consulting environment within large multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Project management skills, including concise verbal and written communication, budget tracking, and proposal development.
  • Experience developing habitat offsetting/restoration plans and effectiveness monitoring programs.
  • Environmental flow needs assessments.
